Choosing a Mechanic

Even if your car is reliable, never breaks down and you have breakdown cover with your car insurance, chances are you are still going to have to employ a mechanic to do the annual service or routine jobs such as changing brake pads or fixing a punctured tyre. How do you choose from the many people offering similar services and find the best person for the job?

Main Dealers
All of the main motor manufacturer companies service and repair cars in their own dealerships. This can be a good option if your car is still under warranty, as the work may well be completed free of charge. For cars out of warranty, you may get a better price by taking your vehicle to an independent mechanic.

Word of Mouth
One of the best ways to find a trusted local mechanic or garage is to ask friends or family for recommendations. This is a more reliable method than choosing someone at random from the internet or from a business directory. There are also internet sites which publish reviews about mechanics and garages, but very positive or negative reviews ought to be taken with a pinch of salt.

Price
Price is always a factor in choosing someone to do work for you, but should not be the overriding factor. Prices which are far lower than competitors may mean that the work is not up to scratch or that sub-standard parts are being used by the company. Safety has to be the main consideration, so choose a company which appears reputable.
