Although traffic accidents are fairly common, many of us will drive for years before ever having an accident. Many will never be involved in one at all, but what should you do if you are involved in a car accident, or are the first person on the scene?
The first thing to do is to warn other drivers to stop any more people becoming involved. Park your car with the hazard warning lights flashing so as other road users know to expect a problem on the road. If you have a mobile phone, use this to call the Gardai, who will then alert other emergency services if required.
Next, assess the situation. Check on other individuals involved in the accident and assist those in need of immediate attention until help arrives all the while ensuring you are not putting yourself in any danger. Try to keep other onlookers away from the scene and get children or uninjured adults to wait well away from the accident site.
If you are involved in a more minor crash with no injuries, stop when it is safe to do so and exchange car insurance details with the other driver. Take photos on your phone of the accident site as these will help to explain what happened at a later date.
