In the colder months it’s important to pay more attention to general maintenance of a car, as nobody wants to be left stranded on a freezing morning because their car has broken down. Maintenance does not have to be time consuming or costly; it’s just a matter of spending a few minutes each week to check that your car is in tip top condition. As well as maintaining your car, ensure that you have the right car insurance policy – there can be many road traffic accidents on icy roads.
Water and washer fluids
During cold weather it is essential to have screen wash fluid with added antifreeze in your washer bottle, as this will help keep your windscreen clear even when the temperature dips below zero. In really cold weather conditions, increase the concentration of the screen wash.
Tyres
Check the threads on your tyres to ensure they have plenty of wear left as bald tyres can lead to skidding and serious accidents. Check pressure too as this will help with your fuel consumption; it’s a good idea to understand how to tell when you need tyres when you first get a car.
Be Prepared
In the colder months keep an emergency kit in the boot of the car. This doesn’t have to be fancy, just a winter coat, some snacks such as cereal bars, a blanket and something to drink. This will ensure that if you do break down, you will be comfortable until help arrives.

Check to ensure your car insurance policy covers you for breakdown assistance, so that if you do break down, help is just a phone call away.
