The knockout stage has been fought and the points counted. We can now reveal our two Squad Goals Finalists…
Less than a month away from the Liberty Insurance Senior Camogie Championship Final and it’s not just Cork and Kilkenny feeling the pressure. This time two Squad Goals teams will also be going head to head on the Croker pitch in an attempt to win €5,000 for their club. But first, a knockout round to determine the two teams that will battle it out.
Skills, music and hay rolling
For the knockout stage of the competition we headed off around the country to visit the five shortlisted Camogie squads. Then we put their skills to the test, live on 2FM. Spectators and supporters alike enjoyed the events’ music, prizes – and even some hay-bale rolling! – but players did not get away lightly. They were there for one reason only – to face the dreaded Squad Goals Wall.
The rules were simple, but brutal. The five best players from each squad were sent to the 13-metre line to score as many points as they could against the wall. The wall covered the entire goal mouth and comprised of a variety of different sized holes, each worth a certain number of points based on its difficulty level. Each player had two shots and at the end of the five events, the two teams with the most points would go through to the Croke Park final.
Closely fought, but only two can go through
The overall winner of the knockout stage was St Lachtains, Kilkenny with 150 points, closely followed by Castleknock, Dublin who, tied in second place with Birr, Offaly with 125 points, won on an additional group skills test taken by both squads on the day. Congratulations to both teams who will now go head to head to replay the Squad Goals Wall Challenge on All-Ireland Final day in Croke Park, where the winner will receive €5,000 for their club.
Good luck to St Lachtains and Castleknock on September 11th. We can’t wait to see what you’ve got!
Thanks to everyone who took part
